Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the use of needles applied to the body to stimulate healing

It was first developed in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is now widely used in Western medicine in both people and animals.
The Chinese discovered that stimulating certain points along the body (acupuncture points) could promote healing even at sites distant to where the needles were applied.
Because acupuncture has an effect not only on the site being needled but also on distant sites it has been found to help in a wide variety of conditions.

Most commonly treated conditions in this clinic:

  • Osteoarthritis causing stiffness and lameness
  • Back pain
  • Disc disease
  • Soft tissue and joint injuries
  • Bladder problems including urinary incontinence
  • Bowel problems

Acupuncture has also been shown to be useful in behavioural treatment and chronic skin disease. It is also extremely useful in the older patient who may not be able to tolerate conventional arthritis treatments or as an extra to help reduce current dose of medicine given.

The most commonly treated species are dogs and cats but smaller pets including rabbits and guinea pigs can also be safely treated. We find animals tolerate needling very well.

Initially a weekly treatment for a minimum of 4 weeks is required leading onto a monthly maintenance treatment depending on the condition being treated, if you are unsure whether your pet would benefit from acupuncture do not hesitate to contact our client care advisers for further details.
